Then
Camp Ne-an-doc, (now Camp Bearberry) was built by John Kisterbock, then one of six medical students from Philadelphia, who came to the Whiteface Inn to celebrate the completion of final exams. During this period, starting in 1896, and running though 1908, Placid Lake seemed to have experienced a small invasion of Philadelphians. Camp Ne-an-doc, built in 1896, was located along a boardwalk, part connecting the "Five Peninsula Camps", and was often the site where people promenaded before and after dinner at the Whiteface Club.
Throughout a series of owners over the 100+ years, Ne-an-doc served a variety of purposes including: a private summer camp, guest housing for of the Whiteface Club, employee housing for the Whiteface Club, the ABC Headquarters for the 1980 WInter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, and now again a private residence to be shared with a variety of families from all over the world.
Purchased in 1999 by the Smith Family of Clifton Park, NY, Camp Bearberry has been lovingly renovated and restored with a combination of vintage Adirondack antiques, original Adirondack landscapes by Kathie Smith and others, and Arts and Crafts furnishings and publications by L & J G Stickley and the Roycrofters. With two floor to ceiling granite fireplaces, full wrap-a-round porches, and furnishings that wrap you up in the past graciousness of an earlier and simpler time, Camp Bearberry awaits your visit.
